Portland
Public Schools is guided by a seven-member Board of
Education,
which is responsible for the education of all children residing
within the school district. Each Board member represents
one of seven zones within the Portland
Public Schools district. Members are elected to zones
by all voters living within the district's boundaries. Board
members serve four-year terms without compensation and may be
re-elected.

Student concerns are represented by a one-year non-official
voting position held by a high school student, who is selected
by the Superintendent's Student Advisory Committee.

The Board meets twice a month to consider, discuss and
determine the directions Portland Public Schools will take in a
range of areas. School Board members establish guidelines
concerning organization, general policies, and major plans and
procedures for the school district.

Working
agreements

The Portland Public Schools Board of Education has developed a
set of working agreements
to guide its
decision-making and communication processes. The agreements cover the Board's role,
meeting procedures, communication processes and members'
roles.

Board operating
protocols

These Operating Protocols establish specific guidelines for
Board members and District staff to follow in order to ensure
prompt responses to requests from Board members and concerned
citizens. These Operating Protocols
are based on the
assumption that there will always be prompt follow-up to Board
member’s requests, with the understanding that labor
contracts may affect the processes for responding to complaints
or sharing information. Board members understand that it is
appropriate for the Superintendent to delegate the
responsibility for responding to Board member’s requests
to staff, but that the Superintendent remains ultimately
accountable for accurate and timely responses.

Meetings

The Board holds its meetings in the auditorium of the
district's Blanchard Education Service Center, 501 N. Dixon
St., at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of each
month. Special meetings at other locations are scheduled as
needed. All regular, special and emergency meetings of the
school board are open to the public, except executive sessions
as defined by the Oregon law.

Scheduling and agenda changes can occur as issues arise, so you
may want to check this Web site for information on the board's
schedule before planning to attend a meeting.
